Driver’s
license/registration: what to do when you
move to Virginia
by David A. Cardon, Esquire
Dear Mr. Cardon,
I am active duty military recently stationed
in Virginia. Do I need to change my driver’s
license, automobile registration, insurance,
city sticker, etc. now that I am living
in Virginia? What about my spouse who is
not active-duty?
If you are a new Virginia resident, and
you are NOT active duty military, within
30 days of moving to Virginia you must comply
with Virginia laws regarding your driver’s
license, automobile registration/title,
insurance, and city sticker. Listed below
are some of the Virginia requirements. If
you are in the military, you are exempt
from some of the requirements. I have noted
below when exemptions apply for military
employees.
• Apply for a Virginia driver's license.
If you are active duty military, you, your
spouse and your dependent children, are exempt and can still keep the license
you already have from another state. If
you fail to comply, a police
officer could
give you a ticket for failure to carry a
valid license.
• Obtain a Virginia safety inspection
sticker. Your vehicle must pass a safety
equipment state inspection. This applies
to everyone, including military. If you
fail to comply, you could be charged with
expired/improper registration.
