Before you can register a vehicle in Virginia,
you must certify that your vehicle is insured
by a company authorized
to do business in Virginia. Your insurance
policy must provide the following liability
insurance coverage:
• $25,000 for
injury or death of one person;
• $50,000 for injury or death of two or
more people; and
• $20,000 for property damage.
Everyone, including military employees,
must have insurance. If you already have
insurance issued in another state, you should
notify your insurance company you have been
stationed in Virginia.
• If your vehicle is not insured,
you must pay a $500 uninsured motor vehicle
fee. This does not provide insurance
coverage,
but allows you to operate the vehicle in
Virginia for a one-year period. This applies
to military employees.
• If your vehicle has altered equipment
such as, tinted windows, altered suspension,
altered lights, check with the
Virginia
State Police to make sure the alterations
comply with Virginia specifications. For
the tinted windows, the
Division of Motor
Vehicles (“DMV”) is authorized
to issue waivers to individuals who have
medical conditions
requiring restriction
from sunlight or bright artificial light.
If you are in the military, you need to
comply even if your
home-state allows altered
vehicle equipment. You are now driving your
automobile in Virginia and must comply with
all Virginia vehicle equipment laws.
